Perhentian Islands

Shots from Perhentian Kecil and Perhentian Besar in Malaysia. Getting to the Perhentian Islands can be a bit tricky. We flew from Kuala Lumpur to Kota Bharu and then took a bus to Kuala Besut. From Kulala Besut we traveled by speedboat to the Islands. The speedboat can be a real "adventure". If the sea is calm then it is a pleasant 45 min ride. But if the sea is rough and winds hard then be prepared for a nasty experience.

On our way back the sea was calm but on our way out to the islands it was pretty stormy. The waves were high and everybody got completely soaked. Make sure you protect your backpack and keep your valuables and electronics in water proof bags. During this ride we also got a lot of bruises after being tossed around in the small speedboat for an hour. Make sure you wear a life jacket!

Kuala Besut and Kota Bharu

To get to the Perhentian Islands (east Malaysia) we had to fly from Kulala Lumpur to Kota Bharu where we stayed for a day before heading out Kulala Besut to catch a speed boat to the islands. We didn't see much of the city. We hardly saw any westerners and the locals where clad in traditional clothing.
