Over Christmas and New Year we spent time travelling across northern parts of Thailand. We rented a car in Chiang Rai and dove north to the Laotian and Burmese border. We’ve been to Thailand many times before, but this was the first time that I was driving myself. I was a bit nervous about this part, the traffic can be quite intense in the cities and the traffic is left-hand traffic some everything is inverted (imagine the roundabouts). Anyway, everything went smoothly and I got used to driving on the ‘wrong’ side of the road quite quickly. Traffic can be intense, but I found it much smoother and less aggressive compared to at home. Using Google Maps as a GPS worked surprisingly well even though there was occasionally no connection (we had local sim-cards).
We started the trip in Bankok, visited Ampawa (southwest of BKK) and then flew north to Chian Rai were we picked up a rental car at the airport. We made our way north, drove through countryside, over mountains and stayed in different locations in and around Lampang, Chiang Rai, Chiang Mai, San Kamphaeng, Doi Chaing, Pha Mi Village, Mae Salong and Pha Ngao. Well and the Golden Triangle too of course.
On our way home, we stayed a coupe of days on Koh Samet and then finally spend two days in Lat Krabang before catching our flight back.
The Mae Klong railway market, in Samut Songkhram province just south-west of Bangkok, a place where there are more tourists than vendors.

Koh Samet - lovely beaches, water and sand. The island is located on a very convenient distance from Bangkok (2.5h by car + 30 min ferry) making it a perfect starting or ending destination when on longer trips. Unfortunately the island is over exploited, full of trash, pricy and the food in the restaurants adapted to tourist (unless you eat in the village instead).
