From December 2025 to January 2026 we spent a month travelling in Vietnam and Thailand. This was our 3rd travel in Vietnam and 13th trip to Thailand.
The places we visited in Vietnam were Saigon, Can Tho (Mekong river delta), Rach Gia and Duong Dong (Phu Quoc Island). In Thailand we rented a car in Bangkok and drove west to Kanchanaburi from where we followed the River Kwai westward and stayed at numerous places along the way. This was the 4th time that we rented a car in Thailand but the 1st time I drove in the center of Bankok which was a bit intimidating at first.
Duong Dong, Vietnam
I have mixed feelings about the island of Phu Quoc. I loved the messy town of Duong Dong and that you quite easily could take a Grab to a desolate beach. The beaches near the hotels for the charter tourists are crowded and overpriced. Patches of the beaches are private and reserved for the guests of the hotel owning the property. Lots of tourists dressing and behaving inappropriately.
We spent a couple of days in Rach Gia before taking the boat to Phu Quoc island. This town was one of my favorite places on the trip - we didn't see any westerners at all. I guess this town doesn't see many tourist. Many of the locals stared, said 'hello' or tried to engage in conversations.
Visiting Saigon for the 4th time, last time was 7 years ago. Renting an apartement in Masteri and exploring the city by motorbike and also using the new skytrain.
